The RESET method

Stop trying to recover perfectly. Start practising recovery imperfectly.

The RESET method is how I help clients turn recovery knowledge into consistent recovery action. This happens in five stages, from regulation, all the way to a life that no longer revolves around food.

Why RESET

Knowledge was never the problem.

Knowing what recovery requires is hardly ever the problem. The harder part is following through, knowing that this will feel new, uncomfortable, and counter to the ED's demands.

RESET brings regulation, emotional coping, identity, exposure, rewiring and trust together, so recovery stops being a daily negotiation.

  • Insight isn't the finish line. Understanding why the ED does what it does is useful. It's necessary. But nothing changes from understanding alone.
  • Discomfort is data. Feeling anxious after a recovery action doesn't mean the action was wrong. Usually, it means you're challenging the ED, which is exactly what recovery requires!
  • Non-negotiables over daily debates. When you remove yourself from the daily tug-of-war, the ED loses its power.
  • The goal isn't managing the ED better. It's building a life where the ED takes up less space, and room for identity, relationships, work, rest, and fun grows.

The five stages of recovery

R · E · S · E · T

R

Regulation

Eat enough, at a steady rhythm, so your body can leave survival mode and relearn safety.

E

Emotional coping

Build real alternatives to using food, restriction or control to manage difficult feelings — anxiety, boredom, anger, loneliness, uncertainty. When emotions have somewhere else to go, the ED loses its main job.

S

Self-compassion + identity

Rebuild a sense of self, worth and identity that's bigger than the eating disorder, and learn to treat yourself with the same fairness you'd offer a friend.

E

Exposure + rewiring

Repeatedly practise the things the eating disorder says are impossible — fear foods, flexibility, rest, spontaneity — until new responses become more familiar than the old ones.

T

Trust + transition

Carry recovery into ordinary life — eating out, travel, work, celebrations — building renewed trust in yourself and your own capacity.

Core principles

Recovery has to become actionable.

Knowing what to do and actually doing it are two different things. That's where coaching differs from another book or course: we turn that insight into action.

Discomfort is data.

Done alone, discomfort often reads as “this isn't working. Stop.” Together we treat it as normal during a time of change. And we keep going.

Non-negotiables are non-negotiable.

Deciding the basics in advance, and going in with a plan, removes the daily negotiation. It removes the arguments you know the ED would win.

Life is the destination.

The goal isn't becoming an expert at managing an eating disorder. It's a life where the ED loses its foothold entirely — a life beyond simply “eating more.”
